Mission Statement

The Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.

This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.

Program Overview

The Family Medicine Training Program at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center is an accredited and rigorous three-year program designed to train the next generation of physicians and physician leaders.

Our hands-on approach fosters excellent opportunities for professional growth, committed mentorship and research. Alongside dedicated attending physicians and enthusiastic colleagues, residents strive for excellence in their training and provide high-quality healthcare in patient-centered environments and community-oriented service.

Conference Schedule

All Family Medicine residents will attend didactics every Wednesday afternoon from 12:00pm-5:00pm.

• Tuesdays: noon – 1:00pm
• Wednesdays: noon – 2:00pm

Additionally, the interns have an additional hour of Intern Didactics on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. – noon.

Regular Series

This series is coordinated with the internal medicine department and their existing didactic series. Family medicine and internal medicine will dually participate in shared didactic content for topics that overlap specialties on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon – 1 p.m.

Cardiology, respiratory, musculoskeletal, gastroenterology, endocrine, psychiatry, and integumentary will each have a dedicated month of emphasis, which will consist of at least five hours of content, including two lectures on special populations (e.g. pediatrics, women’s health, and geriatrics) and one hands-on skills session.

The topics were picked given their emphasis on the ABFM board. The general series will repeat after two years.

Presenters for the sessions will primarily consist of on-site faculty with the relevant HCA Healthcare National Grand Rounds topics used as needed.

Practice management, wilderness medicine, QI, research, ACGME CLER topics, and other longitudinal subject matter will fill in the remaining didactic time as appropriate to the schedule.

For example, hypothermia from wilderness medicine will be taught in October before the cold weather starts. Two hours per month are reserved for short-notice topics to fill in urgent teaching gaps and needs.

Other internal medicine didactic content, available Monday, Thursday, and Friday from noon – 1 p.m., will be optional for family medicine residents to attend unless part of an individualized education plan.

Intern Didactics

Intern didactics operates in four phases (roughly quarterly).

The interns will gather one hour before the regular series on the protected academic afternoon (Wednesdays). One week each month is reserved for time with the program director for Q+A and a short directed lecture pertinent to the current needs of the interns. The other three weeks include sessions dependent on the phase:

• Phase 1: Fundamentals of Care
  • Foundational topics are reviewed and reinforced focusing on diagnostic approaches to low-complexity, high-frequency topics, such as pharyngitis, headaches, cough, and dizziness. Physical exam skills will also be reviewed. These topics are taught by the Core Faculty.
• Phase 2: Advanced Topics
  • The content will move onto topics that are more complex in medical decision-making (e.g. COPD, CHF). These topics are taught by the faculty.
• Phase 3: In this phase, the topics are similar to phase 2 but the teaching responsibility now falls largely to the upper-level residents.
• Phase 4: Each intern will teach a topic of their choosing to their peers. This phase also begins the preparation for becoming a senior resident.

In addition to the didactics, journal club (10/12 months), Morbidity and Mortality conferences (quarterly), and ground rounds (quarterly) are held with all of the residents.
