Staying Safe in Winter
Snow Skiing and Snowboarding
- Always wear a helmet!
- Adults should always supervise young children. Older children's need for adult supervision depends on their maturity and skill; if not with an adult, older kids should be with a friend.
- Equipment should fit the child. Adjust safety bindings at least every year. Always wear eye protection or goggles. Snowboarders should wear gloves with built-in wrist guards.
- A qualified instructor should teach children to ski and snowboard.
- Avoid crowded slopes and skiing in areas with trees and other obstacles.
Sledding
- Help prevent head injuries by sledding feet first or sitting up (not lying down head-first)
- Always wear a helmet.
- Children should be supervised while sledding.
- Keep away from motor vehicles.
- Use steerable sleds, not snow disks or inner tubes.
- Sled slopes should be free of obstructions (trees, fences), covered in snow (not ice), not too steep, and end with a flat runoff.
- Avoid sledding in crowded areas.
