EIRMC is sometimes called upon for the medical role in the child abuse investigation process. SAFE nurse Tara Demkowicz tells the Post Register that it's "simply our job to collect potential evidence," but that it's hard not to get angry at what they see. SAFE nurse Heather Duffey agrees and adds that they make a point of telling each child that there is nothing wrong with them, that they are normal.
EIRMC's SAFE nurses undergo specialized training to be able to handle sensitive child sexual abuse cases. Their training makes them aware that one of the best things people can do is to discuss child sexual abuse and bring the topic out in the open. And in addition to immediately reporting the abuse, equally important is to believe in a child when they tell you. You can read the Post Register story on A-1 and A-4
